What are accident benefits?

In Canada, particularly in British Columbia, accident benefits provide relieves to an injured person in a car accident regardless of who is at fault for that car accident. If you have never involved in a car accident, are a cyclist or a pedestrian, chances are you never heard of accident benefits or do not know if an at-fault party is still entitled to receive accident benefits.

Accident benefits cover several items such as treatment cost or loss of income from disability. You might immediately wonder how these items are paid for and under which insurance policy, especially if you do not have insurance on yourself (eg. you are a passenger in a motor vehicle accident) or you are at fault for the accident. Regardless of who is at fault, accident benefits will be paid out from your insurer, which is ICBC in British Columbia. If you are a passenger, the insurer of the car you were sitting in will pay for the compensations.

Your right to the compensations.

Are you eligible for accident benefits? If you fall into one of the following situations:

+ passenger in an insured vehicle in British Columbia
+ member of the house of the vehicle’s owner
+ a pedestrian or cyclist hit by a motor vehicle
+ owner of the vehicle that involved in the car accident

you are eligible for receiving accident benefits.

Beside treatment cost to help you recover from your injuries, accident benefits also cover income-related losses. An example of these is when you are unable to work due to your injuries. Moreover, if you are a homemaker and are not able to perform your daily tasks, accident benefits allow you to hire someone else to do the work for you.

What are the limits?

ICBC recently increases the limit on the compensations from $150,000 to $300,000 so it covers you more than ever before. The list of treatments covered is also expanding, including kinesiology, acupuncture, or counselling to name a few.

However all related costs have to be justified as reasonable and necessary by your ICBC adjuster.
